Is Composite Bonding Right For You?

Composite bonding can be a good option where teeth and gums are healthy and the planned change is within what composite can predictably achieve — for example small chips, worn edges, minor gaps, or modest reshaping. Cases involving significant crowding, severe wear, heavy grinding (bruxism), or large structural change may need orthodontic treatment, porcelain veneers or other restorative work to deliver a stable, long-lasting result. Your dentist will explain what is realistic for your teeth and discuss alternatives at consultation.

Things to know

  • Composite material can pick up surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, curries and smoking, more so than natural enamel. Routine hygiene appointments help maintain appearance.
  • Some chipping, polishing or repair work over time is normal and is not a sign of treatment failure.
  • Bonding longevity varies between patients and depends on diet, grinding habits and home care. We will discuss realistic expectations at consultation.
  • If you whiten your teeth, this should be done before bonding so the composite can be matched to your final shade. Composite itself cannot be whitened.
  • Quoted fees are confirmed in writing in your individual treatment plan; prices on this page are subject to change.
  • You are welcome to take time before deciding and to seek a second opinion if you wish.

If at any point you are unhappy with your care, we welcome your feedback. Our complaints procedure is published on our website and a copy is available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does composite bonding cost in London?

At our Medical & Dental clinics in London, composite bonding starts from £395 per tooth. A full smile bonding case across the six upper front teeth typically starts from £2,370. SPMD dental members receive a reduced fee (membership terms apply). Your individual fee is confirmed in writing after a clinical assessment, because the final cost depends on the number of teeth, the amount of composite required and the complexity of each tooth.

Why does the per-tooth price vary?

Composite bonding is priced per tooth, but the time and amount of composite required can vary between cases. A small edge repair is quicker and uses less material than reshaping a whole tooth or closing a noticeable gap. After your consultation we will give you a written quote that reflects what is clinically planned for each specific tooth.

What is included in the price?

The bonding fee covers the clinical time of your treating dentist, the composite material, shade matching, shaping and polishing, and standard chairside finishing. Your consultation, any X-rays (charged at £20 per image if clinically required, £10 for members) and any preparatory hygiene or restorative work are quoted separately.

Do I need a consultation before bonding?

Yes. Before any cosmetic bonding we carry out a short clinical assessment to check that your teeth and gums are healthy and that bonding is appropriate for what you would like to change. This is also when we agree the shade, shape and plan with you in writing.

Is composite bonding suitable for everyone?

Not always. Composite bonding works best where teeth and gums are healthy, there is sufficient enamel to bond to, and the planned change is within what composite can predictably achieve. Cases involving large structural changes, severe crowding, heavy grinding (bruxism) or significant bite issues may need orthodontics, veneers or other treatment instead. Your dentist will discuss the most suitable option for you at consultation.

How long does composite bonding last?

With good oral hygiene and routine maintenance, composite bonding typically lasts several years. Longevity varies between patients and depends on lifestyle factors such as biting hard objects, grinding habits, diet and staining (coffee, tea, red wine, smoking). Some chipping, polishing or repair work over time is normal and is not a sign of treatment failure. We will discuss expected longevity and aftercare at your consultation.

Will composite bonding stain over time?

Composite material can pick up surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, curries and smoking, more than natural enamel. Most surface staining can be removed with regular hygiene appointments and polishing. Your dentist will explain how to keep your bonding looking good for longer.

Is composite bonding reversible?

In most cases composite bonding requires little or no removal of natural tooth tissue, which means it can usually be removed or revised in the future. This is one of the reasons many patients choose bonding over more invasive options. Your dentist will confirm at consultation whether any minimal preparation is needed for your specific case.

Do you offer payment plans for full smile bonding?

For larger cosmetic cases, including full smile bonding, we can discuss payment options at your consultation. Single-tooth bonding is normally paid for at the time of treatment.

Are the results guaranteed?

No dental practice in the UK can guarantee a specific cosmetic outcome. The result depends on your starting tooth position and colour, the amount of composite that can be safely added, and how you care for the bonding afterwards. Results vary between patients. We will be honest about what is realistic for your teeth at your consultation and you are welcome to take time to decide.

How do I book a composite bonding consultation?

You can book online or call us on 020 7183 2362. We will start with a clinical assessment so we can confirm bonding is appropriate, agree the plan and shade, and provide a clear written quote before any treatment goes ahead.
