Lost or Fallen-Off Crown Repair in London
When a crown comes off, the underlying tooth (which is usually heavily prepared) is exposed and at risk of decay, fracture, or rapid movement of neighbouring teeth. In many cases the original crown can be cleaned and re-cemented. Sometimes the tooth underneath has decay or has fractured and a new crown is needed.
Flat £30 emergency assessment fee for everyone. X-rays (£20/image, £10 for members) and onward treatment quoted separately in writing before treatment.
What to Do Right Now
- →Keep the crown safe and bring it with you — clean it gently and store it in a small container.
- →Do not try to glue it back yourself with household glue.
- →A pharmacy temporary cement kit can be used to hold the crown in place for a few days while you arrange an appointment.
- →Avoid chewing on the affected side.
- →If the underlying tooth is sensitive, sugar-free chewing gum or orthodontic wax can protect it temporarily.
How We Treat Lost Crown Repair
If the crown and underlying tooth are sound, we can usually re-cement the crown. If the underlying tooth has decayed, fractured, or had a root canal that has failed, a new crown (and sometimes a core build-up, post or root canal treatment) may be required. Costs and timescales are confirmed in writing before treatment starts.
Cost & what is included
Emergency assessment is a flat £30 for everyone — this includes the clinical examination and pain triage. X-rays (charged at £20 per image, £10 for members) and any onward treatment are quoted separately and confirmed in writing before treatment goes ahead. We will explain options and prognosis honestly; you are free to take time to decide or to seek a second opinion.
Common Causes
Understanding what has caused the problem helps you take the right next step — and helps us choose the right treatment. The most frequent reasons we see in clinic are:
- •Cement bond failing after many years of service.
- •Decay developing under the crown margin.
- •The underlying tooth (or root) fracturing.
- •Chewing on something very sticky (toffee, chewing gum) or very hard.
- •A previous root canal that has failed.
Treatment Costs — Guide Prices
All prices below are guide prices for treatments most commonly needed for this kind of emergency. Your written treatment plan after the assessment will confirm the exact figure for your situation, before any treatment goes ahead. Emergency assessment is a flat £30 for everyone (this is the standard rate — the membership discount does not apply to the assessment itself). Multi-visit treatments (e.g. root canal + crown) are quoted together so you can see the full cost up front. We never start treatment without your written agreement.
After Your Appointment
You will leave with written aftercare specific to your treatment. As a general guide, the following points apply to most patients seen for this kind of emergency:
- ✓Avoid chewing on the re-cemented crown for 30 minutes after the appointment.
- ✓Avoid sticky foods for 24 hours.
- ✓Floss carefully — do not pull the floss upwards out of the contact; slide it sideways.
- ✓Contact us if the crown feels high when biting or comes off again.
If anything worries you between appointments, phone the clinic — we would much rather hear from you early than late.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my old crown be re-cemented?
Often yes, if the crown is intact and the underlying tooth is sound. Re-cementation is usually a quick same-day procedure.
Why did my crown come off?
Common reasons are loss of cement bond over time, decay developing under the crown, fracture of the underlying tooth or root, or chewing on something very sticky or hard. We will check all of these.
Is it safe to use superglue?
No — household glues are toxic, can damage the tooth, and make professional re-cementation more difficult or impossible. Use a pharmacy temporary dental cement kit instead.
How much will it cost to re-cement my crown?
A flat £30 emergency assessment fee applies. Re-cementation if appropriate is quoted separately. A replacement crown costs from £995 standard. Full written quote provided before treatment.
