Are Veneers Right For You?
Veneers can be a suitable option where teeth and gums are healthy and the planned change is within what porcelain or composite can predictably achieve — for example improving colour, shape, small gaps and minor alignment. Cases involving significant crowding, severe wear, untreated gum disease, active decay or large bite issues may need orthodontic treatment, crowns or other restorative work instead. Composite bonding can be a less invasive option for some patients. Your dentist will explain the most appropriate option for you at consultation.
Things to know
- Porcelain veneers usually require a small amount of enamel preparation, which means the treatment is considered semi-permanent — once teeth are prepared, they will typically always need to be covered.
- Some sensitivity is normal in the first few weeks after veneer placement and usually settles.
- Veneers cannot be whitened. If you want to lighten your natural teeth, this should be done before veneer treatment.
- Veneer longevity varies between patients and depends on diet, grinding habits, oral hygiene and routine maintenance.
- A nightguard may be recommended after treatment if you grind your teeth, to protect your investment.
- Quoted fees are confirmed in writing in your individual treatment plan; prices on this page are subject to change.
- You are welcome to take time before deciding and to seek a second opinion if you wish.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do veneers cost in London?
At our South Kensington Medical & Dental clinic, porcelain veneers start from £1,095 per tooth and composite veneers from £595 per tooth. A full smile case of 8 porcelain veneers starts from £8,760. SPMD dental members receive a reduced fee (membership terms apply). Your individual fee is confirmed in writing after consultation because the final cost depends on the number of teeth, materials and case complexity.
What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory from ceramic and bonded to the front of the tooth. They generally offer better stain resistance and a longer lifespan, but usually require a small amount of enamel preparation and so are considered semi-permanent. Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the tooth using tooth-coloured resin in one appointment, are usually less expensive and more reversible, but tend to need more maintenance and have a shorter lifespan. Your dentist will discuss which option suits your case at consultation.
How long do veneers last?
Porcelain veneers typically last around 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer, with good oral hygiene and regular maintenance. Composite veneers typically last around 5 to 7 years and may need polishing or repair work along the way. Longevity varies between patients and depends on lifestyle factors such as biting hard objects, grinding habits, diet and oral hygiene. Your dentist will discuss realistic expectations for your case at consultation.
Are porcelain veneers permanent?
Porcelain veneers usually require a small amount of enamel preparation to allow the veneer to sit naturally, which means the procedure is considered semi-permanent. Once your teeth are prepared, they will typically always need to be covered by a veneer or other restoration in future. Composite veneers are usually less invasive and more reversible. We will explain exactly what preparation, if any, is needed for your case before you decide to go ahead.
What is included in the price?
The veneer fee covers the clinical time of your treating dentist, the veneer itself (laboratory or composite material), shade matching, fitting, bonding, and standard chairside finishing. Your consultation, any X-rays (charged at £20 per image if clinically required, £10 for members), digital smile preview, and any preparatory hygiene or restorative work are quoted separately.
Do I need a consultation before veneers?
Yes. Before any veneer treatment we carry out a clinical assessment to check that your teeth and gums are healthy, that veneers are appropriate for what you want to change, and to agree the shade, shape and plan with you in writing. We will also discuss alternatives where relevant.
Are veneers suitable for everyone?
Not always. Veneers work best where teeth and gums are healthy, there is sufficient tooth structure to bond to, and the bite is stable. Cases involving significant crowding, severe wear, untreated gum disease, active decay, heavy grinding (bruxism) or large bite issues may need orthodontic treatment, crowns or other restorative work instead. Your dentist will explain the most appropriate option for you at consultation.
Should I whiten my teeth before veneers?
If you are planning to lighten your natural teeth, this should be done before veneers so the porcelain or composite can be matched to your final shade. Veneers themselves cannot be whitened. Your dentist will discuss this with you at consultation.
Do you offer payment plans for veneers?
For larger cosmetic cases, including full smile veneer treatment, we can discuss payment options at your consultation. Single-tooth veneer cases are normally paid for around the time of treatment.
Are the results guaranteed?
No dental practice in the UK can guarantee a specific cosmetic outcome. The result depends on your starting tooth position and colour, the shade and shape you choose, the underlying bite and how you care for your veneers afterwards. Results vary between patients. We will be honest about what is realistic at consultation, and you are welcome to take time to decide.
