Looking for a dental hygienist near me? Medical & Dental has two clinics in Central London staffed by GDC registered dental hygienists. Our South Kensington clinic is located at 20 Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3DL — two minutes from South Kensington tube station. Our City of London clinic is at 5 Ave Maria Lane, London EC4M 7AQ — two minutes from St Paul's tube station.

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

A dental hygienist is a GDC registered dental professional who specialises in preventive oral health care. During your appointment, the hygienist will carry out a scale and polish — using ultrasonic and hand instruments to remove plaque and tartar (calculus) from above and below the gumline. They will also assess your gum health, check for signs of gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), remove surface stains, and provide personalised advice on brushing and flossing technique. Dental hygienists are qualified to take dental radiographs, apply fluoride varnish, and place fissure sealants where clinically appropriate.

Our Hygiene Treatments & Prices

We offer two types of professional cleaning at both of our London clinics:

Scale & Polish — £89 (£44.50 for members)

Standard hygiene appointment including full scaling, polishing, gum health assessment, and personalised oral hygiene advice. 30 minute appointment.

Airflow Cleaning — £142 (£71 for members)

Advanced jet cleaning using a fine spray of water, air, and powder particles. Particularly effective for removing stubborn stains from coffee, tea, and tobacco, and for cleaning around braces and implants.

New Patient Price — £49

Introductory price for your first hygiene appointment. Includes full scale & polish with a GDC registered hygienist.

All prices listed on our dental prices page. Member prices require membership (from £20/month, 12-month minimum term).

Why Professional Cleaning Matters

Even with thorough brushing and flossing, plaque can build up in areas that are difficult to reach — particularly between teeth and along the gumline. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which cannot be removed with a toothbrush and requires professional instruments. If left untreated, tartar buildup can contribute to gum disease, which the NHS describes as a common condition where the gums become swollen, sore, or infected. Regular hygiene appointments help to remove this buildup and allow your hygienist to monitor your gum health over time.

Our Dental Hygienists

All hygiene appointments at Medical & Dental are carried out by GDC registered dental hygienists. Our clinical director, Jack Button (GDC: 244367), is a qualified Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist who graduated from the University of Manchester Dental School in 2013. Our team also includes Laila Alhussein (GDC: 328882), a UCL graduate and scholarship recipient.

How Often Should You See a Hygienist?

The NHS recommends dental check-ups at intervals advised by your dentist, which may range from 3 months to 24 months depending on your oral health. Most dental professionals recommend hygiene appointments every 6 months for patients with generally healthy gums. If you have gum disease, diabetes, smoke, or are prone to tartar buildup, your hygienist may recommend more frequent visits — typically every 3 to 4 months. Your hygienist will advise on the frequency that is appropriate for your individual needs.
