About the Glucose

The Glucose is an individual blood test offered at Medical and Dental in Central London. A fluoride/oxalate blood is collected by a registered nurse during an appointment lasting approximately 20 minutes. Results are typically available within 1 day" and are delivered securely via email.

Blood glucose testing measures the concentration of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Glucose is the body's primary source of energy, derived from the food we eat and regulated by the hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas. The HbA1c test measures glycated haemoglobin — the percentage of haemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Because red blood cells have a lifespan of approximately 120 days, the HbA1c result reflects average blood sugar levels over the preceding 2–3 months. Diabetes UK estimates that approximately 4.3 million people in the UK are living with a diabetes diagnosis, with a further 850,000 potentially undiagnosed.

Who May Consider This Test

The Glucose may be relevant for a range of individuals. The following are common reasons people choose to have this test:

  • Individuals with a family history of type 2 diabetes
  • People who are overweight, particularly with central obesity
  • Those over 40, or over 25 for those of South Asian, Black, or African-Caribbean heritage
  • Women who have had gestational diabetes
  • Individuals experiencing increased thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained fatigue
  • Anyone who has previously been told they have prediabetes

How to Prepare

1

Fast for 8–12 hours

Avoid food and drinks other than water before your appointment. This ensures the most accurate measurement of glucose and lipid levels.

2

Stay well hydrated

Drink plenty of water before your appointment. Good hydration helps make veins easier to locate and can make the blood draw quicker and more comfortable.

3

Continue your regular medications

Unless specifically advised otherwise by your doctor, continue taking your prescribed medications as normal before the test.

4

Bring your confirmation details

Arrive at your scheduled time with your booking confirmation. The appointment takes approximately 20 minutes.
