A tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a short or tight band of tissue under the tongue that can restrict movement, affecting speech, eating, oral hygiene and comfort. Our dentists release the frenulum using a precise electrosurgery technique — for children aged 6 and over, and for adults. Every case begins with a £30 consultation to confirm suitability.

We treat children aged 6 and over, and adults. We do not carry out infant tongue-tie division at our clinics — for babies, please speak to your midwife, health visitor or GP about NHS infant feeding services.

Restricted tongue movement
Difficulty lifting the tongue to the roof of the mouth, poking it out past the lips, or moving it side to side
Speech difficulties
Trouble with sounds such as 't', 'd', 'l', 'r', 's' and 'th' that may be linked to limited tongue mobility
Eating & swallowing issues
Difficulty clearing food from the teeth, licking, or managing certain textures
Oral hygiene challenges
The tongue can't sweep the teeth clean, contributing to plaque build-up and gum problems
Frenulum discomfort or trauma
The band of tissue catches on the lower front teeth, or becomes sore or torn during normal tongue movement
Gum recession behind lower front teeth
A frenulum attached high on the gum behind the lower incisors can pull on the tissue and be associated with recession

The technique seals small blood vessels as it works, so bleeding is typically very limited
Often No Stitches
In many cases stitches are not required, although your dentist will advise based on your anatomy

The release itself usually takes around 15–30 minutes under local anaesthetic

30 minsEvery patient starts with a consultation, arranged by phone so we can place you with Dr Carlos or Dr Yasha. Your dentist reviews your medical history, examines tongue movement, the frenulum attachment and your symptoms, and explains whether a release is appropriate.
Treatment Plan & Consent
Same visitYou receive a written plan with an exact price, the risks and benefits, and alternatives. For children, a parent or guardian gives consent and remains with them throughout.
The Release
15–30 minsUnder local anaesthetic, the frenulum is released with the electrosurgery machine. The technique is precise and bleeding is usually minimal.
Aftercare & Exercises
Same dayYou'll be given simple tongue stretches and exercises to encourage healing and improve range of motion, plus guidance on eating and cleaning.
Review
1–2 weeksWe check healing and tongue mobility, and can liaise with your speech and language therapist or GP if appropriate.
