About the Osteoporosis Risk Screening

Our Osteoporosis Risk Screening is available at St Paul's Medical and Dental, 5 Ave Maria Lane, London EC4M 7AQ. Located near St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London, our clinic offers convenient access for professionals working in the Square Mile. This screening includes 6 biomarkers with results available in 4 working days, priced at £259 inclusive of blood draw by a registered nurse.

Osteoporosis affects approximately 3 million people in the UK, according to the NHS, and is responsible for over 500,000 fragility fractures each year. The condition causes bones to become less dense and more fragile, increasing the risk of fractures from minor falls or impacts. This screening measures calcium, vitamin D, and bone turnover markers to assess factors that influence bone health and density.

Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone mineralisation — deficiency is common in the UK due to limited sunlight exposure, particularly during winter months. Public Health England estimates that around 1 in 5 adults have low vitamin D levels. Calcium and phosphate levels reflect mineral availability for bone maintenance. Bone turnover markers indicate the rate of bone formation and resorption, which can help identify individuals with accelerated bone loss. Risk factors include postmenopausal status, family history, long-term corticosteroid use, low body weight, and smoking.

Our City of London clinic is open Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The clinic is a short walk from St Paul’s Underground station (Central line) and City Thameslink rail station. Appointments are available throughout the day, and results include a detailed nurse-written review. To book your Osteoporosis Risk Screening, call 020 7183 3709 or book online.

Bone Health Assessment

Osteoporosis causes progressive reduction in bone mineral density, leading to fragility fractures from minimal trauma. It develops asymptomatically over years until fracture occurs. This panel assesses key factors affecting bone metabolism, assisting in risk identification before clinical sequelae develop.

Assess vitamin D status (essential for calcium absorption)

Evaluate calcium and phosphate balance

Measure bone resorption with Crosslaps marker

Identify deficiencies affecting bone mineralisation

Results typically available within 4 working days

Inform supplementation and lifestyle modification

Who Should Take This Test?

Post-Menopausal Women

Oestrogen withdrawal accelerates bone loss. Screening is particularly indicated in the post-menopausal period.

Men Over 70

While less prevalent than in women, male osteoporosis occurs, particularly in older age groups.

Established Risk Factors

Family history, low body mass index, smoking, excessive alcohol, prolonged corticosteroid use, or malabsorptive conditions increase risk.

Previous Fragility Fracture

A fracture from minimal trauma may indicate existing osteoporosis requiring investigation and management.

How to Prepare

1

Stay well hydrated

Drink plenty of water before your appointment. Good hydration makes it easier for the registered nurse to draw your blood sample.

2

Bring a list of current medications

Some medications can affect biomarker levels. Knowing what you take helps our team interpret your results accurately.

3

Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours beforehand

Intense physical activity can temporarily affect certain blood markers including liver enzymes, muscle markers, and hormone levels.

4

Attend your appointment at our City of London clinic

Visit us at 5 Ave Maria Lane, London EC4M 7AQ. We are near St Paul’s Underground station (Central line) and City Thameslink. Open Monday to Thursday 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crosslaps is a bone resorption marker measuring the rate of bone breakdown. Elevated levels indicate increased bone resorption, which may lead to progressive bone loss if not addressed.
