The process
How it works at Wimpole Street

History
Medical conditions, medicines, allergies, previous dental problems and what you would like to change. This shapes everything that follows, from radiograph frequency to what materials are suitable.

Soft-tissue screen
Lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate and throat are inspected and the neck lymph nodes felt. This is the oral cancer check, and it takes about a minute.

Gum assessment
A periodontal probe checks for pockets and bleeding around each tooth. Anything beyond an early score prompts full charting and a referral to the gum health pathway.

Teeth and restorations
Every tooth is examined dry under good light for decay, cracks, wear and failing fillings or crowns. Existing work is recorded so change can be tracked at the next visit.

Bite and jaw
How the teeth meet, signs of grinding, joint clicking and muscle tenderness are noted, as these often explain chipped edges and morning headaches.

Radiographs and plan
Small radiographs of the back teeth are taken where indicated, usually every one to two years, to see between teeth and beneath fillings. Findings are explained with the images on screen and a written plan with fees is provided.

Outcomes
What the result looks like
The outcome of a good examination is knowledge: a clear picture of where your mouth stands, what needs attention now, what can be watched, and how often you should return. For many people the answer is that nothing needs doing beyond a hygiene visit and a change in technique, and that is a perfectly good result.
Where treatment is needed, catching it early changes the arithmetic. A small cavity is a £185 filling; the same cavity left for three years may be a root canal and a crown at over £1,800. Examination intervals are set from your risk, from three months for active disease to twelve months for a stable, low-risk mouth, following national guidance rather than a fixed six-month habit.

- Read the written summary and ask if anything is unclear; the plan is a proposal, not an instruction.
- Book any recommended hygiene visit or treatment while the findings are fresh.
- Keep the recall interval you were given; it is set from your own risk, not a default.
- Tell us about any new medicines or medical diagnoses at each visit, as several affect the mouth.
Informed consent
Risks and honest limitations
Every treatment has trade-offs. These are the ones we discuss at the consultation so that a decision is made with full information rather than after the fact.
- Examinations detect, they do not prevent; a clean bill at one visit does not mean nothing can develop before the next.
- Radiographs involve a very small dose of radiation, which is why they are taken on clinical need rather than routinely.
- Early lesions can be subtle and are sometimes monitored rather than treated, which requires you to return for review.
- Not every crack or hairline problem is visible; some only declare themselves with symptoms later.

It depends on your risk. Stable, low-risk adults may only need to be seen every twelve months; those with gum disease, frequent decay or dry mouth may be seen every three to six. The interval is agreed at each visit.
