Every infection has a window period between exposure and the point at which a test can detect it. Testing inside that window risks a false reassurance. If you are unsure, book anyway and the nurse will advise whether to test now, later, or both.

Strictly confidential. Your record is held by the clinic and results are released only to you through a secure portal. We do not contact your GP, employer or anyone else without your written agreement, and appointments are booked under your own name only so that results can be matched to you.
It depends on the infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are reliably detected about two weeks after exposure; HIV and syphilis blood tests need four to six weeks. Testing too early can produce a false negative, so if you are within the window we will suggest a date to come back.
Typically from 24 hours for urine and swab PCR tests, and two to three working days for most blood tests. The turnaround shown against each test is the laboratory’s standard time. Positive results are phoned through by a clinician, not left to the portal alone.
The laboratory report states the result clearly and is released only to you via secure portal. We do not provide clinical interpretation or treatment — take a positive report to a sexual health service or your GP. Many bacterial infections are treated with a short course of antibiotics; for HIV, hepatitis or syphilis a specialist service will arrange confirmatory testing and care.
No. Many infections cause none, which is why routine screening after a new partner or at the end of a relationship is reasonable. If you do have symptoms, say so at booking so the nurse can add the right swab.
Sexual health testing at Wimpole Street is for patients aged 16 and over. Under-16s should use an NHS sexual health service, which is free and confidential.
