A dental emergency is rarely complicated to diagnose; the difficulty is being seen quickly by someone who will actually treat it rather than hand you a prescription. Wimpole Street is being set up with that in mind: emergency slots held in every session, late openings on Tuesday and Thursday, an early start on Friday and Saturday hours for the problems that surface at weekends.

Triage
What counts as a dental emergency
Anything in the first group should be seen today or tomorrow. The second group deserves a prompt appointment but can usually wait a few days without harm. If you are unsure, phone and describe it; reception will tell you which it is.
Call 999 or head to A&E if
- · Swelling is affecting breathing, swallowing or your eye
- · Bleeding will not stop with twenty minutes of firm pressure
- · Dental trauma came with a head injury, vomiting or confusion
- · High fever together with facial swelling
See a dentist today or tomorrow
- Toothache that painkillers taken as directed do not control, or that wakes you at night
- Swelling of the gum, face or jaw, with or without fever
- A tooth knocked out, loosened or pushed out of position
- Bleeding from the mouth that continues after firm pressure
- A broken tooth that is sensitive, sharp or has a visible pink spot in the centre
Book promptly, within a few days
- Lost crown or filling without pain
- A small chip with no sensitivity
- Mild sensitivity to cold that passes in a few seconds
- A wire or bracket irritating the cheek

Questions patients ask
Not yet. The Marylebone clinic opens on 1 October 2026. For an emergency today, ring South Kensington on 020 7183 2362, which is open seven days a week, or St Paul’s on 020 7183 3709 from Monday to Friday. Both hold emergency slots each day and offer same-day emergency appointments where the diary allows.
From opening day: Monday and Wednesday 9am to 6pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm. Closed Sundays, when South Kensington covers emergencies.
The assessment is £30 for new patients (usual fee £95) and includes examination and diagnosis. X-rays are £20 each. Any treatment is quoted in writing before it begins, using the fee list on this page, which is identical at all three clinics.
No. Emergencies are seen without registration or referral, and you are free to complete treatment with your own dentist afterwards if you prefer.
If swelling is affecting your breathing, swallowing or eye, if you have had a head injury alongside the dental injury, if bleeding will not stop, or if you have a high fever with facial swelling. A hospital can manage the airway and give intravenous antibiotics; a dental clinic cannot.
Wherever the diary allows, treatment starts at the emergency visit: numbing the tooth, dressing, drainage, re-cementing a crown or beginning root canal. Longer procedures are booked with proper time so they are not rushed.
