Dental pain does not keep office hours, and neither, from 1 October 2026, will Wimpole Street. The Marylebone clinic will run until 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, open at 8am on Fridays and see patients on Saturdays, so most working people can be seen without taking a day off. This page sets out exactly when we are open, what to do at the times we are not, and how the fee for an evening or Saturday emergency compares with a weekday one (it is the same). Until opening day, our South Kensington clinic covers seven days a week and St Paul’s covers weekdays.

Phone rather than turning up. A quick call lets us hold a slot and tell you honestly whether we can see you that session or whether South Kensington is the quicker option.

Take a painkiller as directed on the pack while you wait. Alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen, if both are suitable for you, covers most dental pain for a few hours.

Rinse with warm salt water and keep the area clean; trapped food makes almost every dental emergency feel worse.

If a tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown, rinse in milk, and either reinsert it or keep it in milk. This is one situation where minutes matter, so call the nearest open clinic immediately.

Write down when the pain started, what triggers it and anything you have taken; it speeds up the assessment.

Never place aspirin on the gum, and do not use heat on a swollen face.
Take any painkiller only as directed on the pack, never place aspirin against the gum, and ask a pharmacist if you already take other medicines.
Diagnosis
What's likely causing it
Broken tooth at dinner
Hard bread, olive stones and crackling account for a surprising share of evening emergencies. The tooth needs sealing quickly if dentine is exposed.
Lost crown or filling
Rarely painful at first but uncomfortable and vulnerable. A Saturday slot suits many patients for this.
Swelling noticed on waking
Abscesses frequently declare themselves overnight. An 8am Friday appointment or a first-thing call to South Kensington is the right response.
Sports injuries
Evening and weekend sport produce chipped, displaced and knocked-out teeth. Knocked-out teeth need to be back in the socket within an hour if at all possible.
Wisdom tooth flare-up
Pericoronitis tends to worsen over two or three days and often peaks at a weekend. Irrigation and a dressing bring quick relief.

Once you are home
Afterwards
- Follow the written instructions you are given for the specific treatment, and use pain relief as directed on the pack.
- If pain or swelling worsens overnight after an evening appointment, call South Kensington in the morning; it is open every day.
- For anything alarming in the small hours, NHS 111 can direct you to an urgent dental service or A&E.
- Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel fine. Emergency treatment stabilises; it rarely finishes the job.
- Keep the piece of any broken tooth or crown safe until your next visit.
- Consider a routine examination once settled so that future emergencies are caught at the check-up stage.

Wherever the diary allows, treatment starts there and then, whether that is a dressing, drainage, a re-cemented crown or the first stage of a root canal. Longer procedures are booked for a subsequent visit with adequate time.
