The more specific your suspicion, the smaller and cheaper the test can be.
A themed panel
Hay fever that never quite ends, or a rash after some meals but not others. Inhalant, food and eczema-focused panels test the dozen or so likeliest triggers for that pattern.
The broad screen
No idea what is causing it. The ALEX panel (£409) measures around 300 allergens and their component proteins, which also helps separate true allergy from cross-reactivity.
Why blood
One sample, no exposure
IgE testing measures the antibodies your immune system has already made against a substance. Nothing is applied to your skin, so it suits people with eczema, those who have had severe reactions, and anyone who does not want to stop their antihistamines for a week beforehand.
Medication stays as it is
Antihistamines, inhalers and nasal steroids do not alter IgE levels, so there is nothing to stop before the test.
Graded, not yes/no
Each allergen result is reported on a scale, which helps distinguish a mild sensitisation from a reaction likely to matter clinically.
Component resolution
On the broad panel, results are broken down to individual proteins, showing for instance whether a peanut result reflects the protein linked to severe reactions or a harmless pollen cross-reaction.
One £50 sample fee
However many allergens are requested, the needle goes in once and a single sample fee is charged.

Medical testing is self-referral: no GP referral is needed and we do not provide clinical interpretation of results. Please discuss your laboratory report with your GP or a clinician. Allergy testing questions
We offer blood (IgE) testing only. It needs one sample rather than repeated skin exposure, is unaffected by antihistamines, and can cover several hundred allergens at once. Skin-prick testing is available through allergy clinics and may be suggested as a follow-up for certain results.
No. IgE antibodies in the blood are not affected by antihistamines, steroid inhalers or nasal sprays. Carry on as usual.
Allergy is an immune reaction, usually rapid, driven by IgE antibodies; that is what these tests measure. Intolerance, for example to lactose, is a digestive problem with no IgE involvement and will not show on an allergy panel. If your symptoms are bloating or discomfort hours after eating, ask about intolerance testing on the blood tests hub instead.
If you already suspect one trigger, test that single allergen. If your symptoms are seasonal or worse indoors, an inhalant panel covers pollens, dust mite, pets and moulds. If reactions follow meals but the food is unclear, a food panel. If you have no idea, the broad ALEX panel screens around 300 allergens and components in one go.
Through your secure portal as the laboratory report, typically within one to two weeks for the broad panels and a few days for single allergens. A raised result is graded by the laboratory. We do not provide clinical interpretation — whether a result is likely to be clinically meaningful is something to discuss with your GP or an allergy clinician.
No. The service is diagnostic. If the results point to a significant allergy, we will say so and suggest where to go next: your GP, an NHS or private allergy specialist, or in the case of anaphylaxis history, an urgent referral.
Allergy testing at Wimpole Street is for patients aged 16 and over. Children should be referred through their GP to a paediatric allergy service.
