Veneers or teeth whitening: when a smile makeover needs more than a shade change
People who arrive asking for veneers usually have a picture in mind: teeth that are lighter, but also more even, a little longer, without the chip on the left or the gap in the middle. Veneers can deliver all of that at once, because each one is a new front surface designed from scratch. The question worth asking first is whether every element of that picture is really needed. What the treatment involves
Veneers
A veneer case starts with a design stage: photographs, a digital scan and often a wax or resin mock-up placed over your teeth so you can see the proposed shapes before any work is done. If whitening is part of the plan, it is completed first so the veneer shade can be matched to the lighter teeth. Composite veneers are then built directly on the teeth in a single sitting, layered and polished by the dentist. Porcelain veneers require a preparation visit under local anaesthetic at which a thin sliver of enamel is removed, a scan is sent to the ceramist and temporary veneers are fitted for a week or two. At the final visit the ceramic shells are tried in, adjusted for fit and colour, then bonded and cured one by one, with a short review afterwards to check the bite.
Teeth whitening
Whitening starts with a check that the enamel, gums and any fillings are in good order, and a note of the current shade. Custom trays are made from a scan so the gel sits evenly on the teeth and stays off the gums. At home you place a small amount of Boutique gel in each tray and wear them nightly or for a set daytime period for two to four weeks; the peroxide breaks down pigment within the enamel and the shade lifts gradually. If teeth become sensitive, wear is shortened or paused. A review records the new shade, and the trays are kept so that a few nights of top-up gel can restore the result when it begins to fade.

Because a veneer case typically covers between four and ten teeth, totals commonly run from a few thousand pounds for composite to £10,000 or more for a full porcelain set. Boutique home whitening will be £399 regardless of how many teeth it lightens.
Over time the picture is more nuanced. Porcelain veneers generally last 10 to 20 years and composite 5 to 10, so a well-made set is a long-term purchase, whereas whitening is refreshed every 6 to 12 months at low cost. What matters most is fit for purpose: veneers on teeth that only needed lightening spend money and enamel unnecessarily, while whitening alone will disappoint if the shapes are the real concern. A consultation with a mock-up usually settles which applies.

Common questions
It depends on how many teeth show when you smile. Many people display six to eight upper teeth, so a set of six, eight or ten is common, with the remaining teeth whitened to match. Treating only two or four teeth is possible where the concern is limited.
No. Porcelain does not change colour at all and composite whitens only marginally, so the shade you choose at fitting is the shade you keep. Composite veneers can be polished to lift surface stain; porcelain rarely needs it. This is why whitening the natural teeth comes first.
It commits those teeth to always having a veneer or crown, since the removed enamel cannot be replaced. Preparation is kept to around half a millimetre, and a well-bonded veneer restores the strength of the tooth. Composite veneers avoid most of this, which is one reason people who want to keep their options open choose them.
Brushing, flossing and hygiene visits as normal. The main additions are avoiding biting hard objects with the front teeth and wearing a night guard if you grind. Composite benefits from a periodic polish.
Whitening first is a low-risk way to find out. If the lighter shade satisfies you, you have saved money and enamel; if the shapes still bother you afterwards, the veneer plan proceeds with the whitened teeth as the shade reference.
